The Wombats are undoubtedly on a roll and they would hope their latest single will complete a hat-trick of popular hits in succession.
On the back of their fantastic debut album ‘A Guide to Love, Loss and Desperation’ last year, this three-piece from Liverpool saw ‘Let’s Dance to Joy Division’ and ‘Moving To New York’ soar into the top 20 and they could feasibly do it again with a re-issued version of ‘Backfire At The Disco’.
However, it’s not exactly a new fresh track given that it’s been knocking around on the airwaves since its original limited release last year and those who have the album won’t want it either.
Ignoring this though, in essence it’s a top notch banging indie pop song for this musical age where you certainly need some degree of quirkiness and exuberance to get your vocal chords heard.
That’s exactly what lead singer Matthew Murphy is able to do and his squawky, almost hyperactive voice is the perfect compliment to their brand of upbeat, erratic melodies which they have a habit of creating to bring them widespread acclaim and an ever increasing fanbase.
This single also has three other interesting versions, including a South Central Remix, a KGB Remix and a live performance featuring Peter Hook.
Fortunately, in the case of the remixes, they are significantly different with layers of electro beats but there’s no hiding from the fact these require an acquired taste. Nothing ventured, nothing gained but dancefloor adaptations of indie tracks don’t always bring sure-fire success – it can, instead, backfire.
