So, what makes a great pop single? Let’s make a short list. It is essential to make sure that the tune is catchy, of course. Keep it close to three minutes in length, certainly. Make it feel like it is over before it is even begun, so that repeated plays are demanded. Oh, and the lyric should require no thought on the part of the listener. Easy.

By these criteria, Foals have written the kind of song which should still be spoken about in years to come. ‘Cassius’ is stuck in my head after just a couple of spins and I find myself bouncing around to the infectious beat. The spiky guitar and the saxophone demand your attention and this is exactly the kind of single you would expect a band to release on the eve of their debut album. The song lasts a little over three and a half minutes but feels much shorter and the lyric certainly requires no concentration whatsoever. However, there is one requirement missing from our short list of what makes a great pop song and that is the need for it to be timeless. This song is so very much of the moment that it could never be considered timeless. From the shouty, nonsensical lyrics to the high-octane energy, ‘Cassius’ has the year 2008 written right through it. So, is ‘Cassius’ a great pop single? Definitely not. Will it be a hit-single in March 2008? An absolute certainty. I just wish I had even the slightest clue what it is about.
