It's been such a long time since we have heard of Martina Topley Bird. She first emerged in the public consciousness back in '95 working with Tricky providing vocals for magnificent 'Maxinquaye'. Since then she has collaborated with many artists including such great luminaries as the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and Gorillaz.
Her debut album 'Quixotic' was held in much acclaim and was nominated on 2003 for a mercury music prize. But since then has not been doing much on the UK scene in her own right. So then, what do I think of her debut single 'Carnies' from her new album 'The Blue God'? By tying up with pop master Brian 'Danger Mouse' Burton this song with soft electric beats and gentle guitars and drums, and her distinctive voice make for a great radio friendly track. The tune of this record almost emulates the title of the track, singing about cotton candy and ferris wheels, you can almost feel the fun of the fair.
