Editors
Live Review
The Editors made a stop in Manchester on their latest tour, to treat us to sounds of their excellent new album. Stepping on stage in front of a jam-packed and excited Apollo, it was clear tonight’s crowd didn’t need much encouragement to enjoy. Standing in front of a backdrop depicting an industrial building, the sounds of new single and album title track An End Has A Start, echoed around the building, and immediately struck a chord with the crowd. The Editors emanate meaningful melancholy, on one level telling tales of urban decay, loneliness and violence on the streets, and on another shining a light at the end of the tunnel, and delivering positive messages.
This one is Bones the enigmatic frontman conveys before diving straight in to the one such light at the end of the tunnel, a bouncing track that got both crowd and band writhing around energetically.
The anatomical theme continued as strikingly dark Blood struck up, creating a tension and excitement, and proving that not only are the band lyrically up beat, but musically as well, as confident and lively guitars and drums echoed around. Don’t be fooled by those melancholic vocals!
The infectious All Sparks maintained the momentum and noisy sing along mood, never losing its deep, meaningful, and dark tones.
The crowd was bouncing and frontman Tom Smith writhing around the stage, in his own quirky, manner. His flitting from guitar to vocals, to calmer moments with pianos was nothing short of unpredictable, and magically it worked, the band had no trouble following and the crowd enjoyed keeping up with their every move.
The songs were coming thick and fast, the pace was relentless and as the end neared, we were treated to Spiders, hugely popular Munich and to close, Fingers In The Factories before the band relented.
The Editors may strike thoughts of dark and dank pop into your mind, and you would be right, but it is certainly hard to miss their ability to have fun on stage, their energy, meaning and positive outlooks in their songs and performances, and most definitely their confidence.
One to see!
