Scouting for Girls

Album Review

There won’t be many albums which fill you with quite as much warmth heading into the colder winter months and it’s hard to find anything critical to say about this debut effort from Scouting For Girls – only that they’re perhaps too happy for the indie scene!

This piano-centric three piece – consisting of Roy Stride, Greg Churchouse and Pete Ellard – enfuse their tremendously uplifting melodies with a large dose of lyrical wit to produce 10 fantastic poppy tracks, each with their own unique edge.

As a point of reference they’re a combination of Supergrass and Ben Folds Five while in terms of the youthful enthusiasm prevalent throughout this collection, you could say there are shades of a more mature McFly.

It all starts off with the joyous ‘Keep on Walking’ and there’s just no let up from their infectious cheerfulness which could, by contrast, turn people off due to a distinct lack of seriousness.

But as much as the music world needs sincerity there is most certainly a place for unadulterated fun, and that is what this band are unashamedly about.

You just can’t help but kept swept along by the catchy lyrics, especially the final song ‘James Bond’ which can probably be memorised after just one play. Sure, there is an overriding simplicity about the music, but this is what makes them so appealing and engaging.

All in all Scouting For Girls will put you way up on a musical high and too many listens could well leave you fixed with a permanent smile, which can only be a good thing, right?
