The Concretes

Album Review

It's not been at all plain sailing for Swedish band The Concretes, as an ill fated US promotional tour saw their instruments stolen from outside a New York venue, and their lead singer fall seriously ill causing them to cut short their tour.

If that wasn't enough, lead singer Victoria Bergman later announced she was leaving to pursue a solo career. Some late night drunken chats later, and the melancholic pop masters are back with new album Hey Trouble. Taking the lead singer baton from Bergman is drummer Lisa Milberg, and choosing a familiar face over a new member to what is a close knit band could be a clever move for this now 7 piece outfit.

Opener Hey Trouble is a definite highlight growing to be one huge wave of charisma. Neighbouring track A Whales Heart oozes passion and powerful instrumentation, with its affluent bass lines and dazzling horn sounds,

Firewatch is a quirky offering, which reflects a winding path through an unknown land to take you on a journey of unexpecation and enchantment.Didion sees the band delve into a little electronica, and is one for the more laid back moments, Sunday morning anyone?

Long term fans will be happy with Oh Boy which rings true of The Concretes, emotion aplenty and a lofty chorus, really show off the singing voice of Milberg, who appears to be able to handle her new role successfully. The band has certainly not lost their true nature, but also seem content and triumphant exploring new realms.

Finale Are you prepared? shows a band who have been hit hard but come back stronger, with its abundance of moving ups and downs and plentiful charm. There is still talent aplenty left in this outfit, who appears to be here to stay for a good long time yet. Thank god for drunken discussions!
