Goodbye - Ulrich Schnauss Album Review

Ulrich Schnauss
Album Review
Goodbye, is German bon Ulrich Schnauss’ third album cementing him as more than just the indietronica underdog from Berlin.
Instantly, bringing to mind the likes of Scandinavian trip hop and ambient chill out heavyweights such as Röyksopp, Björk and mostly recently Sigur Rós Goodbye opens with Never Be the Same an ethereal sounding mantra with touches of ambient synths.
Although still staying within the ambient genre, Schnauss reaches to darker vocals aiding in a more profound sound as per the album’s second track, Shine. Drenched in (Depeche Mode front man) David Gahan-esque vocals, artistically used as a compliment to a surreal ambiance backdrop.
Schnauss’ break beat and indie influences are obvious as can be heard in the hazily ambient Stars as well as the heavier but still child-like sounds of Medusa with eerie chants as its outro. The title track of this album is reminiscent of the French downtempo duo, Air during their Moon Safari period but Schnauss still manages to maintain a child-like innocence within his choice of sound.
Although there is an array of up and coming innovative dance/ambient/trip hop moguls such as Clark working their way up and out of the underground, Schnauss is set to be one of the frontrunners.
Likely to find commercial success due to the timing of it’s release Goodbye will peak with the increase demand of chill out during the summer season. With the likes of Sigur Rós having brought angelic chill out to the fore, they paved the way for an artist of Schnauss’ capabilities to take the genre further. Goodbye is also likely to find some popularity if producers research to find this ethereal gem and its remixing possibilities.
