Live Review

Judas?!

Scott Matthews’ second visit to Leeds since his debut album Passing stranger was put out, took place at the university’s ‘Mine’ venue. His awkward, flawed comparisons by media wits to ‘James Blunt’ are safely shattered this time around as he now takes the stage with a band and a double whisky and coke.

His performance of that night stayed true – more than ever before to what his album has to offer; beautiful guitars and vocals accompanied by harrowing cello and varied percussion.

His first two songs were played on his own to a completely silent hoard of enchanted onlookers that was reminiscent of his previous appearance at the Cockpit late last year. However at ‘Mine’ that night, Scott Matthews had more to offer.

Picking up an electric guitar brought humorous cries of

Judas
from the crowd, to which he then replied
This is in my blood man.
From watching his solo performance at the Cockpit, it felt some of his songs really needed a band behind them and you couldn’t help but to compare them to the studio album. Now, songs such as The Fool’s Fooling Himself are particularly captivating with the full band.

His solo performance is still present and undoubtedly entertaining in its own right, but songs such as Dream Song are now excelled through graceful cello lines and the full band arrangements really are excellent and vary his set brilliantly. Unlike Bob Dylan, Scott’s studio career has started with a band and his live set is now representing that, and very well.

He is far from an ‘elusive’ acoustic singer-songwriter. Scott Matthews and his band offer a truly entertaining night of great music.
