Single Review
‘Everybody Loves a Loser’ is the third single released from Morcheeba’s top 20 album The Antidote, where the Godfrey brothers brought in female vocalist Daisy Martey to replace the original singer Skye Edwards. However this is an enhancement of the band, especially with this song, as Martey’s funky yet soulful voice gives the melodies real depth and intrigue. The band have always been associated with chillout music and this single is a fine example of this and would be the perfect soundtrack for any lounge bar or evening dinner party. Essentially it is the music equivalent of a coffee table book.
Although a lot of songs in this genre can be easily forgotten about as they become blended into an album rather than standing out alone, ‘Everybody Loves a Loser’ has a chance of being a hit due to a catchy and upbeat chorus crafted with their own unique flair. Other than its primary function to help one wind down and relax, it has the ability to inspire you when boredom or depression looms.
Lyrically, ‘Everybody Loves a Loser’ follows the same theme as the rest of the album, focusing on finding freedom and coming out of a lonely wilderness to form relationships with others. The memorable chorus, "I think you'll find/Everybody loves a loser/So you'll be fine/You won't be lonely long" can only be too true for some.
Although simple in the sense that the tune can stay in your head for hours, there is also a complex rhythm that will embraced by many. Overall this single is a prominent part of Morcheeba’s diversion from their trip-hop and downbeat roots as they attempt to move away from a style that is seen as stale and blending into the background. Essentially it is, paradoxically, their antidote to chillout.
