Live Review

The evening commenced with the humorous and bubblysound of American songstress Jill Sobule, it is a little too early to startthrowing around labels such as a female Billy Bragg, but a crowd that consistedof Bragg fans old and new were suitably impressed.

Is there room in Blair’s Britain for someonemore outspoken and more talented (in more ways than one) than ‘Red’ KenLivingstone and is seen as a living Citizen Smith? Well, a packed all seatedLowry and the House Of Lords Reform Committee can’t be wrong. The latter havingconsulted Mr. Bragg, not before time in many people’s eyes, about reform of theHouse Of Lords. Far from being passed it Bragg was here to promote he latest album‘Must I Paint You A picture’ a greatest hits collection. Old favourites ‘Sexuality’,‘Accident Waiting To Happen’, ‘Milkman Of Human Kindness’ & ‘Help Save TheYouth Of America’ were sung with renewed vigour by a rejuvenated Bragg. It would not be a Billy gig without the banter flowing faster than champagne atRoyal Ascot, as the crowd was kept captivated even between the songs that are usually awkward moments for bands.

Variety was added to the set, as the mercurial Essexsinger songwriter covered material from the vast array of albums which make up theinteresting career behind Bragg, with songs including ‘The Space Race Is Over’and childhood oriented ‘Dry Bed’ rounding up the colourful solo acoustic based set.
