Acoustic - John Lennon Album Review

Album Review

Oh deary me ! What has Yoko Ono done? She's produced an album which is both scraping the barrel, and almost inspirational. Liner notes quote her saying ," I dedicate this album to the future guitarists. John always played from the heart. I hope you will learn to do the same." Mmh - not too sure about that. The latter is true. The former is not. You do however get an insight into the workings of Lennon's methodology, with a lot of home demos. Very good are, Working Class Hero, Love, Dear Yoko ( which is not a patch on Oh Yoko from his masterpiece Imagine ). There are some pretty awful moments, in particular God, What You Got, and the down right weird My Mummy's Dead, and Cold Turkey, as he aimlessly warbles his way through. Live tracks - The Luck Of The Irish, John Sinclair and Imagine lift the quality somewhat. Ono sings on Luck Of The Irish - and it's almost laughable. Sixteen tracks, seven of which are previously unreleased, apparently brought about by public demand. Originally conceived and prepared for release in Japan, to coincide with an annual event around John Lennon's birthday on 9 October. Only real highlights are Watching The Wheels and Imagine, which will always be great what ever from it's presented. As a music journalist and fan, I'm interested of course, but this is not for general consumption. Don't know what Lennon himself would make of this.

Strictly for the fans.
