Album Review
Breathy Canadian Jazz-cross over singer brings out a follow-up to his eponymously titled debut album.’It’s Time’ is a ‘play it safe’ commercial ‘covers album of well know compositions, that will no doubt get an airing in the cool wine bars across the nation, and BBC Radio 2.Writers include the usual fodder, Gershwin,Eddy Arnold,Lennon and McCartney and Cole Porter. Production and arrangements are the only things that make this lightweight effort work.
It’s punchy enough in parts – Feeling Good ( with plenty of reverb on the vocals),mild and inoffensive to even the most discerning ear:how the purists will receive it is another matter.Engelbert Humperdinck’s smash hit Quando is brought to a loungy pace with support from Nelly Furtado, losing its way in the process. Now and again he goes into Sinatra mode-Foggy Day In London being the best and worst example. Then Beatles’ Money is a reckless rendition.
Harry Connick Jnr does this kind of thing better, despite a disastrous Harry For The Holidays Christmas release, with Jamie Cullum taking to a higher level.Buble’s voice is far better in the studio.Last year I saw him live on the telly and he was appalling,so better stick with the CD player.
