Album Review
Jack In A Box springs into action from the very go.With a feel good factor of The Beach Boys and The Everly Brothers, south London duo Turin Brakes release their third album on the Source label.Bursting with humable golden melodies, hopefully this 12 tracker will be a huge success for song-smiths Olly Knights and Gale Paridjanian, who are rapidly becoming the Simon and Garfunkel of the 21 century.Taking their feet off the brakes, they carefully caress every single note and nuance with craftsmanship that sometimes defies belief.Work began in Brixton in early 2004,as they put their 18 month touring schedule behind them and knuckled down to some serious songwriting, resulting in Jack In A Box,mixed by Mark'Spike'Stent at Olympic Studios London.A direct and unpretentious collection,it's ridden with their penchant glorious and memorable ditties, which should keep the album popping up and down the charts(ah la Damien Rice)for the rest of the year. There's plenty of material for singles too.
If they're fishing for their dream, then surely it'll be realised this year.
Despite the high quality single Fishing For A Dream, the first track would have made a greater impact, though at the moment it's getting sufficient airplay on BBC Radio2 which bodes well.
The spirit of clever pop music will never die while Turin Brakes are around. A melodic masterpiece in every way.
