Single Review
Taking a step back instrumental speaking, to set a thoughtful and reflective tone provides the perfect forum for Alex Kapranos’ to show his slick and crisp vocals in a new light. It is as though Franz Ferdinand are reflecting upon the frenetic dance floor fillers displayed on their Mercury Prize winning debut, to give their fans time for reflection. ‘Walk Away’ is both sombre and rhythmic to make a captivating foray into the dark topic of human emotion. The acoustic guitar is at its most prominent yet in a Franz song.
A jangling non album number; ‘Sexy Boy’ shows a commanding direction, as brisk guitars pave the way for the swooning vocals and provocative Blur-esqe ‘woohhoooing’, to complete a rustically rambling offering. The Dark horse track from the recent second album ‘You Could Have It So Much Better’, entitled ‘The Fallen’ is wistfully re-jigged as an acoustic number to illuminate the Glaswegian outfits alluring and bold lyrical prowess;
And the Kunst won't talk to you
Because you kissed St Rollox Adieu
Because you robbed a supermarket or two
Well, who gives a damn about the prophets of Tesco?
Franz Ferdinand have managed to produce some uniqueness and have changed paths from their frenetic first offering. However, they have still managed to ensure that their fan base won't be lost and are likely to grow upon it with this broad and bracing trio of songs.
