Live Review
Support acts are a dispensable novelty when you are an outfit that uses more singers than the English National Opera Company, so a pint of beer was a commonly selected form of entertainment to pass the time until 21;15. The two main protagonists of Washington D.C.'s Thievery Corporation; Rob Garza and Eric Hilton who were suavely decked out in black, breezed onto the stage and set a melting mood with the synth and guitar hand in hand stroll that is The Cosmic Gate, from their latest album Cosmic Game.
The remaining shareholders of Thievery Corporation that featured a bongo player and a brass section then strolled onto the stage. Proceedings opened out into a cosmopolitan free-for-all with the snapping and biting; Le Monde sung in French by the vivacious Lou Lou. Rob and Eric stood on an elevated platform towards the rear seemingly absorbed in their performance; producing sleek synth propelled beats and looked down upon the vast array of performers, with the spirit and jubilance rising as the set progressed. The two mainstays of the group are self confessed adorers of Brazilian music, so they appeared in their element when the delectable South American; Princess Carina entered to sprinkle a bit of R n B vocal spice onto a dynamic lounge fest. There was more improvisation at times than on an episode of Call My Bluff.
The utilisation of two Rastafarian singers gave matters a buoyant jungle feel, especially when they worked the crowd better than Ken Dodd in his prime. The stage had not seen such a numerous and cohesive array of performers since the Polyphonic Spree last came here. The number of people patronizing the stage was trebled for a lively Rasta fuelled set ender, as audience members were invited up to join the rhythm. Tonight, the Corporation proved that music can be multi-dimensional, multi-cultural and, a whole heap of fun into the bargain.
