Album Review

New York's unsung hero who could be blessed with possessing the laudable tag of being an underdog's Ryan Adams is growing in stature with each well thought out release. Alt country/blues rock has never sounded so sincere, soulful and has not been sung with such gusto until this former D-generation front man picked up the mantle. Malin's mournful yet masterful Morrissey meets Ian McCulloch vocals and the spirit of Joe Strummer in his lyrics, give his music down to earth integrity. This is epitomized in the 2nd song 'Swinging Man' on this fourteen track offering, with the terse and enthralling lyrics being the crown jewels contained within it;

"We never had a baby, but she got more tattoos and I got more material for the blues."

The album suddenly gets livelier than a party attended by Charlotte Church in the upbeat, keyboard fuelled 'About You', a life affirming ode to togetherness revealing the tender side to Mr. Malin in contrast to the raw emotion he purveys in the majority of the tracks on the album. Saving the best until last the album comes to a sad yet cogent end in the narrative about 'God's Lonely People', whereby, the New Yorker resurrects the spirit of his fellow city predecessor's 'Patti Smith' and 'Television' in a way that The Strokes and Interpol will never be able to do, and that is with soulful sincerity.
