The suave demeanour displayed by the Skinnyman-esque beat poet of Superqueens singer Michael Conroy was hiding a dark side that struts through the underworld with swagger and objectivity. 'A State Hotel' that featured The Streets 'A Grand Don't Come For Free' back beats provided with precision by the other half of the duo Bruce Mcgill, deomonstrated this to a tee. Proudly parading lacerating and alluring numbers from their debut album 'Cheap Shots', Superqueens fired their lurid and catchy sounds into the seemingly impenetrable minds of an initially wary Manchester crowd.
The trio of indie musical ramblers who form I Am Kloot, fronted by the dead pan and longingly voiced front man Johnny Bramwell gently dove into opener and new song 'Coincidence' taken from their recent 'Gods And Monsters' album. Older favourite, the mournfully meandering 'From Your Favourite Sky' saw the bond between band and followers become as close and trusting as the relationship between counsellor and patient.
The obscure offering that highlights I Am Kloot's ability to boldly stroll into the dark side with compelling precision; 'An Ordinary Girl' saw Bramwell's vocals take on a forceful and stuttering style in order to drive home the points he was making about vampirism in society. A 90 minute set that included some dead pan Bramwell banter with the crowd, a visit from Guy Garvey and highlights such 'Life In A Day' made for a charming and entertaining evening of compelling and laid back indie.
