Dead Men Walking Live Review @ Parr Hall (Cheshire) - 04 Oct 2003

Live Review

There was more than a slight temptation to turn around and slowly make your exit so as no one would notice, when entering the venue to see the intriguing conglomeration of old punks that is Dead Men Walking. The venue was set out as though a pantomime was due to take place with the floor full of seats. This was not a site you would expect to see from a gig featuring some of punk's most influential artists; Glen Matlock of the Sex Pistols, Billy Duffy of The Cult, Mike Peters of The Alarm, Kirk Brandon of Spear Of Destiny and latest addition Slim Jim Phantom of The Stray Cats. However, this soon changed 25 minutes into the gig, when people at the front berated the group with cries of "What's with the seats" of course Glen Matlock, quick to regain his punk spirit retorted "We're not stopping you standing up". After this things got livelier and an old fashioned mosh pit grew.

The crowd as well as being lively, were also knowledgeable and greet hits from each of the above five mentioned bands with equal enthusiasm. 'Spirit Of 69' a hit from The Alarm saw the first swoon of people towards the front, and saw beer fallen through the air like rain. '68 Guns' was well received and stood out being sandwiched by newer and lesser known tracks. One of the highlights of the nostalgic evening was 'Stray Cats Strut' a Stray Cats song, that saw Slim Jim pounding the drums like it was the good old days and his voice is as they say in the trade "not half bad for a drummer".

There was an unorthodox interval whereby the band members congregated in the foyer to sign things and have a general chat. The band would then return to complete their impressive 2 hour set that saw obvious crowd pleasing Sex Pistols 'God Save The Queen' and 'Pretty Vacant', which were sung by the mercurial Glen Matlock. Sure, he did not have the angry and in your face nature of Johnny Rotten when he used to sing it, but he made up for it all in spirit, something that was appreciated by the crowd and tempts you into checking out his solo stuff. This was more than just a gathering of has beens playing the nostalgias card, some of the songs sound as good now as they did in the hey day of each of the member's main band.
