She was appointed as Britain's 'Poet Laureate', a landmark as she was the first woman awarded this position.
In 2009, she was the subject of a South Bank Show documentary.
Her plays have included 'Cavern Of Dreams' and 'Casanova'.
She has also written children's stories such as "The Princess's Blanket".
