One of the early American jazz artists to crossover into mainstream popularity, Cole started out as a jazz pianist in a trio.
He had a memorable, peerlessly smooth voice, famously heard on hits including 'Let there be Love', 'When I fall in Love', 'Nature Boy' and 'Unforgettable'.
'Unforgettable' later became a hit 'duet' accompanied by his daughter Natalie Cole, who has enjoyed a successful career in her own right.
