MTV, the World's first 24 hour music TV station is 25 today. The channel which aptly opened with renowned UK producer Trevor Horn's band Buggles - 'Video Killed the Radio Star' has been playing non-stop music hits since 1st August 1981.

It has seen the premiere's of many massive music videos including Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' and will today see the premiere of a specially-commissioned video by UK act The Streets. It has assisted the careers of many stars, including Dire Straits whose ‘Money for Nothing’ had Sting singing: “I want my MTV”.

MTV Europe came into existence in 1987 and was the start of MTV as a global phenomenon. It has also been responsible for a number of spin-offs, including Beavis and Butthead, The Osbournes, Jackass and The Real World – a reality show which predates Big Brother by some years, not to mention MTV’s movie arm which has produced films such as Murderball, Hustle and Flow.

It will be interesting to see how it evolves over the next 25 years, given the plethora of music channels out there and the challenge from mobile TV and new media.

The end of the month sees the MTV music awards, with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Shakira both nominated in seven categories.
