Salford’s The Lowry has just announced it’s new season of events, and, as ever it’s a diverse programme of material, covering opera, ballet, contemporary dance, theatre and pantomime.

North England’s national opera company Opera North will be performing Giuseppe Verdi’s ‘Don Carlos’ (in June 2009), Gershwin’s ‘Of Thee I Sing’ and Shakespeare’s ‘I Capuletti E I Montecchi’ (Montagues and Capulets – Romeo and Juliet) in November.

Frantic Assembly bring Othello up-to-date, re-positioning him in a white Northern English town, playing a bouncer, playing from 30th September.

Tim Firth’s Calendar Girls – adapted from the film of the same name, is playing from 20th October. Calendar Girls tells the true story of the Yorkshire women of the Women's Institute, who pose nude in a calendar to raise funds for Leukaemia Research.

Contemporary ballet company Ballet Boys perform their “Greatest Hits” on the 16th and 17th October, with rising star on the contemporary dance scene Hofesh Shechter perform their ‘In your rooms & Uprising’ performance – the week before, on 9th and 10th October.

The 1927 Theatre Company bring their multimedia spectacle ‘Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea’ to Salford on 31st October and 1st November. The multi award-winning surreal satire combines live music, performance and storytelling with film and animation.

November sees the new production by British playwright Kevin Fegan – Fireflies - directed by Noreen Kershaw (from Channel 4’s Shameless). The play is “A love story waiting to happen”, telling the stories of Leigh and Nelson, two characters in crisis on a Salford housing estate.

Also in November, the RSC stage a performance of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet – between 11th and 15th of November – just after Opera North’s ‘I Capuletti E I Montecchi’.

Later in the month, renowned choreographer Matthew Bourne’s lavish production of Tim Burton’s ‘Edward Scissorhands’ rolls into Salford for just over a month, starting on 11th November.

Panto season is taken care of by the classic ‘Wizard of Oz’ fairytale, between 29th November and 4th January. Keeping with the Children’s theme, madcap Fox basil Brush rolls into town with his ‘High Skool Mania’ on 30th October.
