Heaven knows they're miserable - The Smiths 80s kiddy TV show
Comment
It is hard to believe this actually happened - and it's certainly something I didn't know of at the time as a kid, but obviously some kids TV producer in the 80s was after an up-and-coming band to entertain kids. Looking for a happy-go-lucky type of band, naturally this guy picked purveyors of all things bright and rosey, The Smiths, to take a bunch of kids on an outing to Kew gardens.
They get on "Charlie's Bus", with Johnny Marr clearly gesticulating his disapproval to one of the youngsters, and arrive to the tune of "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable now". It is not easy trying to pick the most surreal moment. Oh, but perhaps it's when they meet up with Sandie Shaw to have a sing-song....
Luckily - for us not The Smiths - someone taped the event for posterity, and - even better - posted it on YouTube to share with the masses.
The quality is pretty poor but you must check it out - seeing is believing.
