Independent Music retailer Fopp, in partnership with the PRS Foundation (PRSF) and Clear Sound & Vision (CSV), is launching a search for the best unsigned music acts across Central and Northern England (see list of areas covered, below).
The winners will be given the opportunity to have their music promoted and sold in Fopp’s network of 50 stores across the UK and will also:
- Record a three track EP at a professional studio for free
- Have their recording edited, mixed, mastered and pressed
- Work with CSV designers on artwork for their finished CDs
- Play at their local Fopp store to a crowd of new music lovers
- Perform at a London showcase in front of invited key music industry professionals

This is the 4th year Fopp has run such a competition, with previous years covering the South West and Wales in 2004, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the North of England in 2005 and London and the South East last year.
There will be four winners chosen by a panel of industry insiders including Radio 1’s leftfield DJ Rob da Bank and renowned music promoter and programmer at prestigious London music venue Dingwalls, David Messer.
Ryan Latham, Head of Marketing at Fopp says: “This is our 4th year supporting the Fopp Award for new music, and looks set to be one of the best - I'm really looking forward to it. This year's Fopp Award covers a huge area and we’re expecting a lot of interest. To all new bands - hurry up and get your demos in, this time next year you could be in stock at Fopp nationwide."
Charlotte Ray, Foundation Director at the PRSF says: “The PRS Foundation is proud to be a part of this scheme which offers a unique opportunity to unsigned bands. We know there is a lot of untapped talent in North and Central England and we look forward to hearing some great acts this year.”
James Hobbs at Clear Sound and Vision says: "It has been great to watch the scheme grow over the past 3 years and to have discovered some fantastic acts along the way. We feel proud to have given unsigned artists the opportunity to further their careers in the music industry. We are expecting the standard from the Central and Northern England to be high and look forward to working with the winners."
Entries can come from any genre; you can be in a band or a solo artist. Entrants must be 18 or over and write your own original material - no covers.
