Elly Roberts' Beatles commemorative plaques campaign
Press Release

Following the success of Beatles commemorative plaques in north Wales at Mold, Rhyl and Prestatyn, it is now confirmed that two further plaques will go ahead in south Wales – Cardiff and Abergavenny.
Cardiff
Having received consent from the Capitol Shopping Centre in Cardiff, it is now confirmed that the shopping centre will be the sponsor. Plans are now under way to design the bi - lingual plaque (a black disc approx18” in diameter with white inscription) it will record that the Fab Four played their final date of their last British tour at the former Capitol Cinema, Cardiff on Sunday 12 December 1965. They never toured Britain again.
Its agreed location is inside the building on the ground floor, above and between the two lift doors. It is envisaged that the plaque will be unveiled sometime in May or June this year.
On Wednesday 22 November 2006, I met Sir Paul McCartney at the Virgin Mega Store in London, where I brought the project to his attention.
Because he is now aware of the project, we will be sending an open invitation for him to attend the unveiling ceremony in Cardiff.
Abergavenny
Plans are also underway to design a plaque to be erected at the Borough Theatre, formerly the Ballroom Town Hall, in Abergavenny. After a meeting with the theatre manager, it was agreed that the most suitable location was in the foyer.
The bilingual inscription will record the date The Beatles played there on Saturday 22 June 1963. It is intended that the unveiling will take place on the 44th anniversary this summer.
We are now actively seeking potential sponsors, so interested parties should contact the number below. The commemorative plaque is designed by commercial artist Tony Booth, who was commissioned by Brian Epstein to undertake the first ‘artistic image’ of The Beatles in August 1962, shortly after Ringo joined the group.
