The Guitar's the Star - Rock Dominates UK Album Sales
News

Guitar/ Rock music dominated the UK sales figures last year, accounting for 36% of album sales in the UK. Better still, the top 10 albums was dominated by UK acts including James Blunt whose album 'Back to Bedlam' is still in the UK album charts 18 months after it's release, Coldplay , the Kaiser Chiefs and Gorillaz and British artists accounted for 49.4% of all UK album sales in 2005.
The UK domination of the top 10 was probably due to the record rise in UK album releases in 2005 - 31,291 for 2005, slightly less than 2,000 more than 2004.
The top ten albums for 2005 were:
- Back to Bedlam - James Blunt
- X&Y - Coldplay
- Intensive Care - Robbie Williams
- Employment - Kaiser Chiefs
- Demon Days - Gorillaz
- Face to Face - Westlife
- Eye to the Telescope - KT Tunstall
- Breakaway - Kelly Clarkson
- Curtain Call - Eminem
- Forever Faithless - Faithless
In the singles chart, it is pop music which still dominates - a reflection perhaps of the younger age demographics of singles buyers compared to the generally older album buyers.
